Travel requirements
Check your documents before you fly.
Passport
International flights need a valid passport. Many countries require it to be valid for at least 6 months after you arrive, with blank pages.
- Check the expiry date before you book.
- The names on your booking must match your passport exactly.
- Keep a photo of your passport, apart from the original.
Visas and travel authorizations
Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa or an electronic travel authorization, such as ESTA for the United States or eTA for Canada. Apply early: some take weeks.
- Some countries ask for a visa even when you only connect there.
- Airlines and border officers may ask to see your return or onward ticket.
Traveling with children
Every child needs their own passport for international travel. When a child travels with one parent or with other adults, some countries and airlines ask for a signed consent letter from the parent who isn't traveling.
- Bring the child's birth certificate in case you are asked for it.
- Children traveling alone follow each airline's rules. See Special assistance.
Health
Some destinations require vaccinations, such as yellow fever, or a health form. Carry prescription medicines in their original packaging, with a copy of the prescription.
Arrival and customs
Some countries ask you to fill in an arrival or customs form, online before you fly or when you land. Have the address where you're staying ready.
Official sources
Rules change often. Always check official sources and your airline before you travel. Entry to a country is always decided by its authorities.
